how to survive morning classes

hello there!

how many morning classes are you taking this semester? and how many times have you already wished you could just stay in bed?

most people try to avoid morning classes as much as they can, but they always somehow manage to sneak their way onto your schedule. waking up super early every morning to go to class can make us feel super unmotivated and set the wrong tone for the rest of the day.

so i decided to write this article in hopes to help some of you out there, but also maybe for you to learn to enjoy your mornings a little, or at least not hate them that much! read on for some tips!

▸ your morning starts the night before

you should always prepare as much as you can the night before in order to make your morning easier. the goal here is to minimize the number of decisions you have to make right after you wake up so that your morning flows nicely.

here are some things you can start doing at night to have brighter mornings!

‣ pack your backpack

‣ plan your outfit

‣ shower (this way you don't have to wake up earlier to shower, dry your hair, etc)

‣ charge your phone

‣ make a to-do list for the following day

‣ double check that you’ve done all of your homework

‣ prepare yourself a lunch and some snacks

▸ go to bed at a reasonable hour

being tired every morning may seem like a typical aspect of college life, but it shouldn’t be. it’s probably because you don’t get enough sleep. i know sleep is difficult to get in the busy life of a college student, but 7-8 hours a night can be achieved if you really try and cut back on the things that keep you up at night like netflix haha!

▸ have a sleep schedule

it’ll be easier to get out of bed if you’re well rested by the time your alarm goes off. to create your own sleep schedule, i recommend you follow these steps:

1. decide how much sleep you want to get 2. subtract that many hours from the time you need to wake up 3. the result is your goal of when to go to bed

don't worry if you can't follow that exactly but, try to get as close as possible and try to keep your sleep schedule consistent, it's easier than having to readjust every few days.

▸ wake up early

set your alarm as early as possible to give yourself some time to make breakfast, and maybe even get a workout in before getting ready for class. the longer you’re awake before your morning class starts, the less tired you’ll feel when you arrive.

▸ have a morning routine

this way, the moment you are out of bed, you already have something to start doing instead of giving in to the comfort of your bed. the most efficient way to do this is having the first step of your morning routine requiring you to leave your bedroom. at first, following a morning routine can be hard, but stick to it for about 3 weeks and it will become a habit.

▸ put on some music

create a playlist that makes you wanna move and play it throughout your morning routine. it will give you that extra energy boost you need to start the day and it will also improve your mood!

▸ don't worry about appearance

wear something comfortable to get through your class smoothly. something that makes you feel warm and relaxed so that you can concentrate better in class! put in as much effort as you want, but I would seriously make "comfort" a top priority!

▸ drink water

if you need a cup of coffee or some other kind of caffeine fix in the morning, that’s fine. but, make sure you’re also staying hydrated with water. drinking water is really good for you! bring a refillable water bottle to class and take a sip at least every 10 to 20 minutes. this will keep you awake and feeling good!

▸ eat breakfast before class

being in class on an empty stomach is the worst. try waking up an extra ten or fifteen minutes early to eat breakfast. having food in your stomach will give you the energy you need to stay focused and keep you alert during morning classes.

bonus: your stomach will not make those embarrassing sounds during class.

tip: you don't need to eat a big breakfast. just a granola bar or an apple will give you that extra boost to stay awake!

▸ stop thinking about it and just do it

most of the times, we find ourselves wanting to stay in bed because we give time to our brain to think. once your alarm goes off, get out of bed without even considering it. also, your attitude and mindset here is everything. think positive and be positive. it will be hard for you to wake up if you are constantly reminding yourself how much you hate morning classes and how badly you don't want to go.

▸ have a positive attitude

you know those thoughts you have when your alarm goes off? it’s too early for this. i can already tell today will be a bad day. there’s no way I can stay awake in class today.

simply changing your perspective and shifting your thoughts to something more positive can seriously affect the way you feel in the morning and throughout the rest of the day.

you probably won't become a morning person for life with these tips, but they can definitely help get you through this semester's early classes successfully.

that's it for today's article! i hope you found it helpful! what’s your earliest class this semester? do you have any other tips on how to survive your classes? let me know in the comments!

hugs,

V
