studying online this semester
hey gorgeous!
as the new academic semester starts with a global pandemic yet to be resolved, there are many things we have to get used to. since we have transitioned to online learning, there are few things we have to get prepared for. since online learning took over in the middle of my spring semester, it was difficult for me to get prepared and i found it hard to feel motivated to get my work done from home but, on the bright side, i feel like online classes allow us to develop some new skills like self discipline and independence.
with the upcoming semester, i have come up with a list of tips that i hope will be beneficial to you guys! after all we are in this together!
before class
plan your tasks for the day or week
every sunday sit down with your planner and plan out how and what you're going to study for the upcoming week. the more specific your are, the better chance you have of completing the task. this way you will stay more motivated and have a clear picture of what you need to do.
wear something comfortable that’s not too comfy
i know most people recommend putting on your best work outfit for online meetings or classes, but sometimes what we wear could also feel uncomfortable which might end up becoming a distraction. wear something that's comfortable but, also gets you in a study mood, such as sweatpants or leggings with an oversized tee. avoid staying in your PJs because this would just remind you of how sleepy you are.
establish a relaxing morning routine
by having a stress-free morning, you won’t feel so tense while studying. this makes it easier for your brain to absorb information and gain knowledge. eat a fulfilling breakfast and stay hydrated as well to raise your energy levels. i also encourage you to do some light exercises so that your body feels fully alert and energized.
get a good night's sleep
sleep is extremely important for you to stay focused during class so that you won’t drift off to dreamland. practice a healthy sleeping schedule and avoid being on your phone before bed because that’s how you would end up pulling an all-nighter.
establish a designated workspace
pick a space where you will consistently attend your zoom classes and study. make sure it has a good lighting, that it's a quiet place and that you have all your materials such as pencils and notebooks. i suggest not to use your bed as a study space as it might make you feel unmotivated.
review your study material
if your professor or teacher has sent out the topics you will be studying the next day, it’s always best to review it by yourself first. get a brief idea about what you will be learning, this way, you won’t feel completely lost while listening to your lessons.
during class
prepare yourself a healthy snack and water
at times, online classes can be very long and this causes us to lose our concentration. it's helpful to prepare a snack that we can munch on while listening, such as almonds, nuts, etc. and don't forget to drink a lot of water! HYDRATION IS KEY!
put your electronics on silent or ‘do not disturb’ mode
devices are our biggest distractions, so put it away. stay focused in class by being attentive in listening to what the teacher is teaching.
don’t be afraid to ask questions
never be afraid to ask your teacher questions because online classes can definitely be more difficult. if you want to keep those grades up, then be active in seeking knowledge, and don’t be afraid to fail.
note: it's not embarrassing at all to ask whenever you don’t understand something. stay back at the end of the online class if you have any questions for exams or assignments.
after class
get fresh air
open your windows and blinds. use natural light and stay hydrated. it's much more pleasing.
revise your study material
after classes, it is beneficial to refresh our memory by revising what you've learned in class. do some practice questions and write down some notes. this way, you can study effectively.
take a break and practice self-care
finally, this is your time to chill and do whatever you want. i encourage you to walk around, stretch and simply relax your mind. start some new hobbies that are self-fulfilling and enjoyable.
keeping in touch with friends
talk to your friends. you are not alone!
online classes can be tough, but once we get used to it and establish a good routine, we can get the best out of it. stay safe and healthy, and get them grades!
all the best and i hope that you guys enjoyed reading this article.
